This is the fourth chapter of the Goblin Slayer Side Story II: Dai Katana manga.
Full Summary[]
Entering the large temple, the party sees that it's filled with adventurers there for various reasons. Female Bishop explains some are there to pray for good fortune in battle, while others are there for healing. She's even heard that there are high-level clerics who can perform the Resurrection miracle to rescue people from death's doorstep. The nun they saw on their way in speaks to them confirming what Female Bishop says, and wants to clarify that anyone who doesn't think that they don't need to make an offering when requesting a miracle is welcome there. Captain reasons that the requirement of an offering is a matter of the gods not wanting their followers ripped off and used by the multitude of non-pious people who come seeking miracles. Female Bishop gives Trade God's Nun a few coins as an offering, at which point the nun recognizes her and is happy to see that she's found companions.
After that Captain wishes to move on with whatever business Half-Elf Scout had in mind when he suggested they go to the temple. Half-Elf Scout asks Trade God's Nun if they can pick out an adventurer, and she grants them permission and bids them farewell as they move further into the temple. Captain askes what this is about and Half-Elf Scout starts explaining. There's a miracle called Preservation. The temple doesn't simply abandon the wounded to die. Some brought there are beyond help, but others could still be saved if a suitable donation was made. Those who are on death's doorstep but don't have enough money aren't simply left to die. Instead they can have the Perservation miracle used on them putting them into a sleep and stored within the temple until their companions can bring the offering to revive them. He notes that it doesn't last forever and that like Resurrection, Preservation does need "faith". Ultimately from what he's heard a lot of them just get left behind. Captain reflects on how that would happen - parties destroyed while trying earn the money, or parties that find new members or simply leave the city. Half-Elf Scout finishes explaining that his idea is to pick one, pay for their revival, and treat the fee as a debt to be worked off. The women of the party find the idea distasteful, but further discussion is interrupted by the arrival of Female Warrior. Behind her she drags five body bags request their burial.
While the priest on hand goes to start the procedures, Female Bishop recognizes Female Warrior as one of the people who'd occasionally talk to her at the tavern. Female Warrior overhears and takes the opportunity to enter the conversation, getting right next to Captain without him realizing it much to his shock. After briefly greeting Female Bishop, Female Warrior introduces herself to Captain with a number, and says she's a freelance fighter freshly available. Captain inquires about her using a number instead of a name, and she brushes it off as her ID number which might as well be her name as she had to become an adventurer to cancel her tax debt. Female Wizard looks at the body bags and askes if Female Warrior is okay, and Female Warrior says she's fine as she'd only just met them in the tavern the day before, while quietly saying it's harder the first time. As Female Wizard realizes that she's been in the dungeon before, Female Warrior fishes for an invitation to join their party. Captain asks his party what they think and they're okay with her joining, but Captain himself wishes to have one clash of weapons with her. Female Warrior accepts and the one move they agreed to is a draw. As Captain apologizes to his confused party, Trade God's Nun shows up angry about them engaging in any sort of violence in the temple. Female Warrior placates her, and the nun bids the party well as they leave the temple. As they leave Captain asks Female Warrior if he met her standards, and she acknowledges he did and says she assume she met his as well.
