The Demon Lord (魔神王, Majin-ō), also referred to as Demon God, is an antagonist in the Goblin Slayer series, who is the ruler of the demons.

Appearance

In the anime, the Demon Lord is a massive humanoid with purple flames coming out of his skull-shaped head. He is seen with a pair of shoulder plates coupled with a large black cape. A flashback depicts the Demon Lord as a gigantic and menacing creature with demonic wings, red eyes, and a pair of horns on the sides of his head.

In the Goblin Slayer Side Story II: Dai Katana manga, the Demon Lord is a large dark humanoid who wields a long red sword.

Background

The Demon Lord is the overarching figure worshiped by the Evil Sect in charge of various monsters and the like, some of whom were recruited as his generals. Ten years before the events of the main series, he was defeated by a group of adventurers, which included Sword Maiden. It's also iterated throughout the series that several Demon Lords existed.

Chronology

The Demon Lord had discovered the Party of the Magic Knight, Priest, Sand Bandit, and Blacked-Haired Warrior; in disguise as "Black Hat Wizard", offered the Party his assistance in leveling themselves up quickly. This wasn't a lie, but it also wasn't entirely true either, as the Demon Lord planned to strengthen the Party so he could harvest their more powerful life forces later. He was able to trick the Party into killing their fellow Adventurers, convincing them that their victims were criminals and "bad people" to ease their consciences.

Black Hat Wizard

After some time training up the Magic Knight's Party in the Dungeon of the Dead for a while, the Black Hat Wizard was able to raise the Party to a great deal of fame. In fact, the Party had become so famous, even the Knight of Diamonds, a rising star, had become very wary of them and gave out warnings.

Sometime later, the Black Hat Wizard took note that Magic Knight's Party and started growing restless about wanting to stop their "level grinding" and collecting their friend that they abandoned earlier, Female Bishop. He took note that Female Bishop had joined a new Party since Magic Knight abandoned her; sensing an opportunity to spill more blood, Black Hat Wizard slowly convinced Magic Knight's Party to take her back by force. After Magic Knight's Party failed, Black Hat Wizard harvested their life force through the cursed rings he gave them, killing them, and revealed himself to Captain.

After a long battle with Captain and his Party, the Golden Party succeeded in slaying the Demon Lord and bringing peace to the world.

Goblin Slayer Volume 1

The Demon Lord was resurrected a decade after being killed by Sword Maiden and other adventurers, but he was later killed again by Hero.

Trivia

• The Demon Lord's usage of Cursed Rings seems to be a reference to Tolkien's villainous character Sauron and his usage of Cursed Rings to try and control the rulers of Middle-Earth.
