Female Merchant (女商人), formerly known as Noble Fencer (令嬢剣士, Reijō kenshi), is a young woman who fled from her noble family to become an adventurer and make a name of her own.

Appearance[]

Female Merchant has honey-colored hair and wears fancy clothing that reflects her noble status. Her hair was originally tied into two pigtails, but she cut them off after surviving her ordeal with Goblins.[4] The back of her neck is branded with the sign of the God of Wisdom,[5] which was partially removed by Sword Maiden after the Goblin Paladin was defeated.[6]

As a merchant and royal advisor, Female Merchant wears a starched, proper outfit. Her hair grew out a bit in the interim, but she now maintains it at a length just past her jaw and halfway down her neck.[1]

Noble Fencer shows her resolve

During her earlier time as an Adventurer, Noble Fencer was confident yet ambitious, as she looked down upon Goblins and thought that she and her Party would become Platinum-ranked with ease.

However, her traumatizing ordeal with Goblins as well as the slaughter of her whole Party turned her into a despondent and brooding individual fixated on killing the Goblin Paladin and retrieving her rapier. She also starts to become extremely violent towards Goblins, even taking her anger out on Priestess when she prays for benediction over Goblin corpses (something she does to ensure the Goblins won't return as undead). After she and Goblin Slayer's party manage to destroy the Goblins and retrieve her rapier, Noble Fencer mellows and becomes more social with her new friends, coming to terms with her mistakes and the death of her Party, even making amends with her parents and Priestess for her earlier aggression.

After coming to terms with all her mistakes and trauma, Female Merchant dedicates her life to using her newfound fortune and business sense to help train rookie Adventures so that no one can suffer the same mistakes she made.

Chronology[]

Background[]

Noble Fencer became an Adventurer to become an independent woman who did not rely on the aid of her Noble family, whom she was rebelling against. She had imagined that she would rise to Gold and even Platinum Ranks within a short period of time.[4]

Noble Fencer and Half-Elf Fighter battle Goblins

Noble Fencer, along with her party, killed a group of Goblins near the northern village before setting their sights on what appeared to be their nest in the mountains nearby.[7] They block the exits out of the cave and camp near the entrance, intending to ambush the Goblins once they are out of resources. However, weeks passed with little activity and the party was already running out of supplies, causing a great deal of friction in the Party against her. To make up for her mistake, she goes back to the village to replenish their resources, but is only able to get a few trifles due to having already taken too much earlier.

Upon returning to the camp, she finds herself ambushed by a group of Goblins, becoming horrified upon seeing them hold the severed heads of each of her party members except Half-Elf Fighter who was captured. Attempting to draw her sword, she realizes that the snow within its scabbard had frozen into ice, which allowed the Goblins to quickly surround, assault, and rape her and Half-Elf Fighter. The Goblin Paladin then steals Noble Fencer's aluminum rapier and brands her neck with the sign of the God of Wisdom in an abandoned chapel. She is left in the temple, being kept alive as a plaything as the Goblin Paladin has plans for her until Goblin Slayer's party rescues her shortly after at the behest of Sword Maiden who was hired by Noble Fencer's parents.

At the village inn, Noble Fencer reflects on the mistakes and unfortunate circumstances that led to her torture and her party's demise, having been informed of Half-Elf Fighter's painful passing. As she overhears Goblin Slayer's party discussing infiltrating the Goblin fortress in disguise, she requests to accompany them, which they all but High Elf Archer approve. Noble Fencer cut off her pigtails and offered them as a reward for the time being.[4]

Upon successfully managing to infiltrate the fortress, however, Noble Fencer is harassed by the Goblin Priest escorting them and in a rage, viciously beats him to death, ruining the party's original plan, much to High Elf Archer's anger.[8] While watching the Goblin Paladin's ceremony, a curse activates the brand on her neck, causing her great pain. Her resulting screams alert the Goblins to their location, forcing the party to fight them off; and she blames herself for causing another ordeal with Goblins. Once Goblin Slayer assures her he will retrieve her rapier and slay the Goblins, Noble Fencer pulls herself together and joins the party in combat. Following the escape from the fortress, a prompt by Goblin Slayer has Noble Fencer use her Lightning Spell to create an avalanche that buries the pursuing Goblins who remained after the Goblin Paladin's defeat. Goblin Slayer climbs out of the snow and gives back her rapier, to which Noble Fencer wept with all her might.[9]

She goes with the party to celebrate the New Year in the Frontier Town Guild tavern. There, she tells Priestess that she plans to talk things over with her parents and make graves for her previous party members. She then promised to write plenty of letters to Priestess and High Elf Archer.[10]

Goblin Slayer later reveals to Priestess what the Goblins were planning on doing with Noble Fencer, they needed her Lightning Spell to help them forge more aluminum ore for weapons in the refinery they were making. They would've used her as a power source and a plaything until she died, and used the resulting ore to build an army of near invincibly armored and outfitted Goblins.

Female Merchant and Sword Maiden

True to her word, Noble Fencer made amends with her family and entered into their mercantile industry. She uses the small fortune she made to quickly amass even more funds and influence, earning herself recognition from the Royal Court. With this, she uses her funds to start a training center in the Western Frontier to train rookie Adventurers.

During this time, Female Merchant bought a Centaur Racetrack, complete with a few teams, in the Water Town and managed to turn the whole sport into a popular attraction in the town. This not only made Centaur Sports popular in the town, especially the Women's Division, but won Female Merchant a small fortune.

At this time, Noble Fencer is re-titled "Female Merchant" by the author.

Goblin Slayer Volume 6[]

At the Temple of Law, Sword Maiden removes much of the brand that was on Female Merchant's neck. When Goblin Slayer is mentioned during their conversation, Female Merchant states her intention of doing something on her own for the repose of her fallen party and for novice Adventurers. When Sword Maiden asks Female Merchant what she thinks of Goblin Slayer, she simply responds that she owes him her life.[6]

Female Merchant presents Goblin Slayer to the Royal Court

By this time, Female Merchant is now a merchant and an Advisor to The King regarding management of Adventurer affairs. When the topic of Adventurer training centers is brought up during The King's council, Female Merchant informs him that they are nearing completion, but the people have had difficulty accepting the notion that one had to embark on a course of study upon becoming an Adventurer. Female Merchant proposes that they offer the incentive of food, funded by having the training centers deal with Giant Rats and roaches in the sewers using tax money that is normally used to reward Adventurers for such tasks anyway, which the King approves. Having noted the appearance of Sword Maiden, the mention of a priestess who had her mail stolen and other details mentioned during the council, Female Merchant realizes it was Goblin Slayer's party that escorted Sword Maiden to the Capital. She leaves the discussion and comes back with the party just before Sword Maiden is pressured to go rescue The Princess, who had been recently kidnapped.

To aid Goblin Slayer's Party, Female Merchant brings them to the stable and gives them three fast horses she had prepared. Once the Party set off, Female Merchant asks Sword Maiden if she ever wishes to go adventuring again, to which she replies that she no longer has the courage to do so. Female Merchant responds that sometimes it was acceptable not to overcome one's fears, but admits that other times, it was all she could do to simply face them.[11]

Goblin Slayer Volume 10[]

During the events leading up to the Summer Festivals, Female Merchant and Sword Maiden grant an audience to Heavy Warrior who brought them news of an undead horde that Goblin Slayer's Party had discovered. Realizing this was a part of a much larger situation, the two get the Hero and her Party involved.

Female Merchant and Priestess ask about the Desert

During the waning days of Summer, the Royal Court had decided to take action in the Desert Kingdom and planned to end the Prime Minister who had aligned with the Forces of Chaos and restore the Desert Princess to power. Upon discovering that the Captain of the Guard, the Prime Minister's right hand man, was breeding an army of Goblins, Female Merchant volunteered to convince Goblin Slayer to go to the Desert Kingdom and deal with the growing army. The Royal Court, having already known Goblin Slayer to be a specialist in the manner had a granted her approval to deal with this as she saw fit.

Female Merchant leaves for the Frontier Town, meeting Club Fighter, Supreme God's Cleric, and Harefolk Hunter who had agreed to get Priestess for her. Reunited, Female Merchant tells Goblin Slayer about the growing problems in the Desert Kingdom, to which Goblin Slayer is disinterested as usual until she warns him about the growing Goblin crisis to which he quickly agrees to handle it. With this, Female Merchant shyly tries to ask to join the Party for the quest, but Priestess sees through her and invites her to join them. With this, she and Priestess take Guild Girl and Witch's advice to hound Spearman for information on the dangers of the Desert where she eagerly jots down notes.

On their way to the Desert, Female Merchant procured wagons full of items to disguise her and the Party as a merchant and her bodyguards. Trouble quickly finds Female Merchant, as she notes that the Desert Kingdom's army has devolved into thieves and Goblin Riders are now running freely across the open desert, forcing her into conflict.

Later, Female Merchant leads the carriages to a deserted village, forcing her and the others to investigate. As she and the Party realize a freak sandstorm hit in the middle of the night and killed the inhabitants, her extra driver loses his mind and runs away, straight into a newly formed sandstorm, killing him and forcing Female Merchant and the party to barricade themselves in a village building until the storm blew away. She and the others were saved by the timely arrival of Myrmidon Monk and his crew who took them to the Desert Capital.

The ladies' idea of a strategy meeting

Inside the Desert Capital, Female Merchant takes the other girls to a spa so they can strategize their next move, and get the sand off them. Female Merchant finds the fort housing the Goblin Army and devises a plan to get Goblin Slayer in by pretending she is a merchant selling her goods, she takes a Dragoontooth Warrior from Lizard Priest as backup as Goblin Slayer and crew infiltrate from the rear. While distracting the guards, she wears a special perfume laced with a toxin to knock out all the guards while she waits for the rest of the Party to arrive with recused hostages...and an army of Goblins hot on their tails! Female Merchant uses this opportunity to have her Dragontooth Warrior take the liberated women to safety, but not before giving "him" a kiss for his bravery and helping her against the guards earlier.

Using the perfume she was wearing, Female Merchant and the Party lead the Goblin further and further up the fortress, forcing the Desert Guard to slaughter them and whittle down their numbers as well. Female Merchant eventually learns Goblin Slayer's plan to use the migrating Giant Sand Manta and Dwarf Shaman's Falling COntrol spell to use them to get down to the ship she had brought from their getaway. Though taken aback, Female Merchant admits she has come to expect such things and is far more willing to the plan than others in the Party as they escape the fortress.

Female Merchant used Lightning, it's not very effective...

As the sand ship drifts away, Female Merchant admits she needs a rest, like all the others, but their ship makes a stop by a strange rocky outcropping, which is home to a sleeping Red Dragon, one that a Goblin just woke up! Realizing she and the rest of the party have no other choice, Female Merchant battles against the groggy Dragon despite her already being fatigued and tired. She works with Goblin Slayer, who throws a bottle of gasoline at the Dragon, and she fires her Lightning spell at it causing the Goblin to fall off the Dragon's back allowing Goblin Slayer to kill it and giving Dwarf Shaman the opening to cast his Sleep spell on the Dragon. Victorious and exhausted, Female Merchant and Priestess state they'll take a day to stay in town and do nothing but take a bath all day before they both drift off to sleep. Goblin Slayer and the others take them and the hostages back into town, allowing her and Priestess to rest.

Female Merchant has a plan

During a Royal Meeting discussing the conclusion of the War in the Desert and the return of Desert Princess to power. Female Merchant is thanked for the role she played in helping destabilizing the Prime Minister in the Desert and his Goblin Army.

When the topic of the Forces of Chaos forming elsewhere is brought up, Female Merchant stops the King from going himself to take care of business and forms a plan with The Princess to get the Hero and her Party to handle the Undead King instead.

Goblin Slayer Volume 14[]

While concluding another Royal Meeting, Female Merchant and the King discuss the situation in the newly annexed Northern Lands. The King even mentions how the Viking Chieftain is technically his Uncle despite being of similar age, due to his sister having become his father's mistress years ago shocking Female Merchant. When she asks how that happened, the King reminds her how much pressure Noble families like theirs have on creating more and more healthy heirs.

With this, Female Merchant realizes she is always left alone with the King when meetings are done, making her realize the Royal Court is hoping she becomes the King's mistress or wife much to her shock.

Female Merchant watches Lightning win the race for her

As Goblin Slayer comes to the Water Town in search of a missing Centaur Princess, the Party is referred to Female Merchant who is revealed to own quite a good stock in the Centaur Sports circuit. Female Merchant reveals her training house recently acquired a very popular runner who not only matched the description of the runaway Princess, but was also missing and immediately offers her assistance in confirming if the Princess and Silver Blaze were one in the same.

Female Merchant takes the Party to one of her box seats for an upcoming, of course dressing Priestess and High Elf Archer up in beautiful dresses for the occasion, and cheering for her racer Lightning who just won big. During the race, Baturu begins to feel her Centaur culture is insulted by the spectators and accuses Female Merchant of "putting their women on display" and refuses to believe her missing Princess would ever partake in such ridiculous fanfare. Unperturbed, Female Merchant takes them to her training house and speaks with Lightning who confirms for her employer, in her usual flirtatious manner towards her, that confirms that Silver Blaze indeed matched the missing Princess perfectly. With that Female Merchant left to attend to important matters, but was happy knowing she had left happy knowing she had given her friends a massive step in the right direction.

Later, when Goblin Slayer and the Party had rescued Silver Blaze and returned her to the Races, Female Merchant opens her box seats to the Party so that they could watch her return to the races. Here, Baturu apologizes to Female Merchant, finally understanding why so many Centaur runaway to the races and Female Merchant accepts her apology. She then watches as Silver Blaze takes to the field and wins her race to thunderous applause.
