Wizard Boy (少年魔術師, Shōnen Majutsushi) is an Adventurer introduced in Volume 6. He is the younger brother of the late Wizard, and sought to avenge her by slaying goblins.[1]

Appearance[]

Wizard Boy has red hair, green eyes, and wears glasses, much like his sister. He wears a green tunic with blue pants, and carries a magical staff that lacks jewel on the end signifying he never graduated the Magic Academy.

Personality[]

Wizard Boy is introduced as a quick-tempered and irreverent Adventurer, displayed when he shoved Priestess aside, yet blamed her for getting in his way. It's further shown that he wouldn't listen to experts' opinions as he thought he just "knew better" than them and he had an opinion on everything. He was best described as a "Know Nothing Know-it-All", and quickly earned the ire of everyone in the Guild for his arrogance. Like many "Know Nothing Know-It-Alls", Wizard Boy was completely confused as to why everyone was angry with him and looked down on him for his comments, thinking he had done nothing wrong.

He also, despite having done zero quests and never questing with her, quickly ridiculed Priestess for failing her promotional exam; loudly claiming all she did was "hide on the back row" and repeatedly antagonized Priestess on more than one occasion and disregarded her commands during his first Quest. A lot of Wizard Boy's hatred and disrespect for Priestess stemmed from his dislike of Priests (something his sister also had) and that his sister had died of poison, something he believed a Priest should have been able to save her from furthering his dislike of Priests.

After his encounter with a Troll, he becomes more open to advice and his relationship with others improves, accepting he had screwed everything up for his first Quest. Afterward, Wizard Boy still had a bad attitude but, just not as bad as he had previously, and was able to at least start working together with his fellow rookies better.

In spite of his aggressive traits, Wizard Boy holds his late sister in very high regard. As such, when people at his academy mocked the circumstances of her death, he became determined to avenge her demise at all costs. Similar to Goblin Slayer, he developed a fixation on killing goblins as a result until he decided he had to let go of his anger and move on.

Chronology[]

Background[]

Wizard Boy went to the same academy in the Capital as his prodigious older sister, Wizard, and worked to become a great Wizard like her. However, after learning that his sister died fighting goblins and that the same people in the academy who had praised her as a prodigy, were now ridiculing how she died[1], he left before finishing his studies to avenge her.[2]

Wizard Boy meets Goblin Slayer's "Wife"

Wizard Boy went to the Adventurer's Guild and stated his intention to kill goblins to the Staff who refused to give him Goblin Slaying Quest because he was not ready. When meeting Goblin Slayer, the latter bluntly rebuffed Wizard Boy's request to learn how to kill goblins when he asked. Guild Girl had asked Goblin Slayer to help him find a place to stay, Wizard Boy was taken to the farm. At the Farm, Wizard Boy was forced to stay in the shed under Goblin Slayer's watch after getting off on the wrong foot with Cow Girl's Uncle.

Wizard Boy mocks Priestess's failed Promotion

At the Guild the next day, Wizard Boy was sick from overeating Cow Girl's breakfast and overheard Priestess's conversation over her failed promotion exam. Wizard boy openly ridiculed her, earning the ire of every Adventurer in the building, especially the Priests like Apprentice Cleric who threatened to kill him. Wizard Boy didn't understand why everyone was getting mad at him, and heard all the other accomplished Adventurers write him off as "another Rookie high on his horse". Infuriated, Wizard Boy loudly mocked Goblin Slayer and Priestess, proclaiming he was going to succeed despite their sound advice he didn't believe in. Deciding to intervene, Female Knight told Wizard Boy to slay goblins to back up his braggadocios confidence, but on the condition that he be led by Priestess, something he wasn't keen on until Female Knight made it very clear, she wasn't asking him, she was telling him what he was going to do much to his fears.[2]

Wizard Boy screws everything up

While venturing a mausoleum with Goblin Slayer's Party being led by Priestess, Wizard Boy refused to listen to any advice and work with the Party in anyway. After hearing Acolyte's screams, he rushed off to help her, using his only Fireball usage when he found her and got spooked, only to be surprised by a Troll and see he had fallen for a trap. Realizing he had been put in this position because he didn't listen to any advice and his own stupidity, Wizard Boy screamed out to the others to at least warn them. Luckily, Goblin Slayer's Party was able to fend them off and not only rescue him, but Acolyte as well. As Priestess was trying to figure out what to do now that he had completely ruined her well planned strategy, Wizard Boy realized everything was his fault and tried to apologize. However, they were in the middle of a battle and he didn't get the chance as Priestess handed leadership back to Goblin Slayer who swiftly formed a plan to kill the Troll and goblins. Afterward, while drinking at the tavern, Wizard Boy told everyone that Acolyte would "never live down being beaten by goblins" as he revealed the source of his attitude; his sister's death and that how everyone who once praised her, now mocked her death to goblins, before he slumped unconscious.[1]

Training is hard

The next day, Goblin Slayer dropped Wizard Boy off at the new Training Grounds where he was roped into training vigorously with Spearman alongside Rookie Warrior.[3] As they rested with Rhea Fighter, who Wizard Boy started to show affection for, and Apprentice Cleric, she and Rookie Warrior reminded him he had absolutely no achievements to his name despite his attitude. He countered that the two likewise have abysmal accomplishments but was silenced when he realized they still had done more than him. Priestess then arrived with lunches made by Cow Girl and Wizard Boy, still not exactly over his dislike for Priests, largely ignored her until she reminded him, though not telling him, of his sister's dream of slaying a Dragon, giving him something to think about. Sometime later, Dwarf Shaman taught Wizard Boy that he had three more spells at his disposal, which he could use by reciting a selected word in his Fireball incantation.[4] Later, Rhea Fighter ropes him into going on a small quest with her, Rookie Warrior, and Apprentice Cleric under Priestess's leadership.

During a sneak attack between the rookie Adventurers and goblins in a tunnel near the training grounds, Wizard Boy is put in a unit with Rhea Fighter, Apprentice Cleric, and others under Rookie Warrior's leadership by Goblin Slayer. He ordered them to defend until help arrived, but he would send Priestess to lead them should he be needed elsewhere. Under Priestess's leadership, the rookies led a charge to rescue the other trainees on their way home. During the battle, Wizard Boy finally discovered he could use a Shout spell and used it to scare all the goblins away back to Goblin Slayer, who led the Veterans to exterminate them. As much as he wanted to slay the fleeing goblins, Priestess ordered a full retreat to safety; Wizard Boy acknowledged accepted his mission was to help save the trainees and that he was "No Goblin Slayer" as he ran with the rest of his party.[5]

Rhea Fighter and Wizard Boy set off

Shortly thereafter, Wizard Boy stated his intention to travel back to the Capital; though he wanted to get even with the people at the Sorcerer's Academy, he decided they would laugh no matter what he did. As he proudly announced he would become "Dragon Slayer" like his sister aspired to, Rhea Fighter declared she would go with him much to his embarrassment. Before walking off with his new party member, Wizard Boy was asked by Goblin Slayer to mention him should he ever come across a Rhea named Burglar as the two walked off to Adventure. [6]

Interim[]

Sometime later, he and Rhea Fighter got roped into becoming "students" of an unknown man who began training them in the Capital, though Wizard Boy made it clear he wasn't his mentor. The two started making a small name for themselves by becoming helpers for more accomplished Adventurer Parties, but even he accepted he was either being used as a makeshift guide or a "bag carrier" most of the time.

Goblin Slayer Volume 9[]

Wizard Boy had returned with Rhea Fighter when they were contracted to lead Hero and her Party to the Northern Mountains so they could stop the Unending Winter. At first he thought it was a prestigious moment, but he was mainly used as a "bag carrier" for the trio for Gold-Ranked women to carry their stuff much to his embarrassment.

On the Mountain, he ran into Rookie Warrior and Apprentice Cleric who he confronted with why they were on the Mountain until Rhea Fighter kicked him into remembering his manners. Rhea Fighter did most of the talking for him as Hero and her Party strolled up and took over the situation in her own bombastic manner completely ignoring him.[7]

Goblin Slayer encourages Wizard Boy

Later, Wizard Boy and Rhea Fighter were hired by Goblin Slayer, Spearman, and Heavy Warrior to act as forward scouts for their recent quest to combat the Forces of Chaos in a ruined city. Mapping out what he could, Wizard Boy tried to use his glowing staff to signal "all clear" for the trio of veterans as he got to his position, but when nothing happy he got a laugh from Rhea Fighter.

Suddenly, the trio arose from the wrecked sewer waters with breath rings, freaking Wizard Boy and Rhea Fighter out comically. With their job done, he prepared to leave but was asked by Goblin Slayer if he was "any closer to slaying a Dragon", encouraging the boy to keep climbing.[8]

Goblin Slayer Volume 16[]

Abilities[]

Spells[]

  • Fireball: By reciting the words "Carbunculus... Crescunt... Iacta!", Wizard Boy can cast a powerful streak of fire. However, he is not limited to using Fireball alone; by reciting one of the three words in the usual incantation, he can create fire, expand an object or fire a projectile, essentially granting him a total of four spells.[4] He can only use it once a day.[1]
  • Shout: After learning from Dwarf Shaman, Wizard Boy managed to teach himself another spell using his Crescunt chant which allows him to produce a magic shout strong enough to scare away a small Goblin swarm and could be heard from far distances. The Shout can cause damage to the ears though as he ordered everyone to cover their ears before he cast it.
